Can We Be Born With Trauma? How History Lives in Our System

We tend to think of trauma as something that happens to us: a car accident, an toxic relationship, the death of someone we love, or a childhood home that never felt safe. In this understanding, there is a clear before and after. Something happens, and the nervous system responds.

But what if the story begins earlier? What if some of the conditions that shape us are already present before we take our first breath? What if the environment surrounding our development includes not only the emotional and physiological state of our mother during pregnancy, but also the state of her nervous system while we are in utero—and the effects of war, famine, persecution, displacement, abuse, or other experiences that began before we did?

Researchers across psychology, neuroscience, developmental science, and epigenetics have increasingly become interested in this question: How much of our story begins before we are born?

The answer is complicated. We do not inherit traumatic memories in a literal sense. There is no gene that contains our mom’s grief or our grandfather’s experience of war. But there is growing evidence that experiences can leave biological, psychological, relational, and cultural traces that extend beyond the person who originally experienced them. Some of those traces may begin influencing us before birth.

My interest in this topic is also personal. The last three generations on my mother’s side of the family were displaced and began again in a new country. Later, living abroad myself and forming close relationships across cultures made me even more aware of how much history can sit quietly inside a family. As a therapist, particularly working in the United States—a country shaped so profoundly by immigration—I think we do clients a disservice when we look only at the individual in front of us without asking what came before them. What did their parents live through? Their grandparents? What was lost, survived, silenced, or adapted to along the way?

In psychology, we often use the term biopsychosocial to describe the idea that a person is shaped by the interaction of biological, psychological, and social forces. I would argue that history belongs inside that framework too. Our biology does not develop in a vacuum, our psychology is formed within relationships, and those relationships exist inside families, cultures, migrations, political events, and generations of lived experience.

The Womb Is Our First Environment

Before we encounter the world ourselves, we encounter it through another body. During pregnancy, the developing fetus is continuously receiving biological information from its environment. The placenta helps regulate this relationship, mediating exposure to nutrients, hormones, immune signals, and aspects of the maternal stress system.

This is one reason researchers have become interested in the relationship between maternal stress during pregnancy and later development. Stress does not simply “transfer” from mother to fetus, and the biology is far more complex than that. Maternal stress can involve changes across hormonal, immune, metabolic, behavioral, and placental systems, all of which may influence the developmental environment in different ways.

One system that has received particular attention is the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, or HPA axis, one of the body’s central stress-response systems. The placenta plays an important role in regulating fetal exposure to stress-related hormones, including cortisol. In other words, long before a baby has language, conscious memory, or any understanding of what is happening in the outside world, their developing biology is already responding to an environment. These processes are part of a much larger relationship between trauma, the nervous system and the body.

This does not mean that ordinary anxiety, sadness, conflict, or difficult periods during pregnancy “traumatize” a baby. And the intention is not to unnecessarily blame mothers. Human development is adaptive, and outcomes vary enormously between individuals. The more interesting question is what happens under environments where mom is exposed to extreme or consistent situations of stress—like physical abuse, poverty or war.

Our first encounter with the world begins before we can remember it.

Can Trauma be Inherited? History Enters the Womb

One of the most famous studies in this area involved mice. Researchers conditioned male mice to associate a cherry-blossom-like smell, with a mild shock. Their offspring, who had never undergone the conditioning, showed heightened sensitivity to the same scent. Researchers also found related changes in sperm and the animals’ odor-processing systems.

Human researchis more complicated. Psychologist and neuroscientist Rachel Yehuda, has conducted studies of Holocaust survivors and their children have found differences in stress-related biological markers, including DNA methylation, but this does not prove that traumatic memories are literally passed through DNA. Family environment, grief, displacement, parenting, culture, and biology are all intertwined.

Migration can also shape questions of culture, identity and belonging across generations, particularly when families have had to assimilate or rebuild their lives somewhere new.

Similar claims are sometimes made about descendants of enslaved Black Americans, but current evidence does not show that slavery-era trauma has been epigenetically transmitted across generations. Ongoing racism, inequality, discrimination, and environmental stress remain much stronger explanations for present-day health disparities.

The larger point is that history can travel in many ways: through biology, but also through attachment, family roles, stories, silence, culture, and the nervous systems of the people who raise us.

Exposure alone does not determine whether someone will develop lasting trauma symptoms. The same experience can affect people very differently, depending on development, support, temperament, environment and what happens afterward. The science of epigenetic inheritance is still developing, but the broader idea is clear: trauma can be inherited in more than one sense.

Families Pass Down More Than Genes

Imagine someone grows up in a family shaped by financial instability, migration, or starting over with very little. Money may never feel like just money. It can become tied to safety, control, sacrifice, and survival. Spending may bring guilt, saving may feel compulsory, and choosing a career for passion rather than stability may feel irresponsible.

That person then raises a child in more secure circumstances, but the emotional rules around money remain. By the next generation, there may be far more financial stability, yet anxiety about spending, fear of losing everything, or pressure to constantly achieve can still persist.

No epigenetic mechanism is required to explain this.

Families transmit experience through attachment, behavior, beliefs, emotional regulation, stories, silence, expectations, and roles. A family shaped by war may teach vigilance. A family shaped by persecution may learn not to draw attention to itself. A family shaped by forced migration may place enormous importance on achievement, assimilation, or financial security. A family shaped by abuse may organize itself around secrecy or emotional avoidance.

What was once a survival strategy can become a family pattern long after the original danger has passed.

Understanding these adaptations is an important part of trauma-informed therapy, where the goal is not only to understand what happened, but what the mind, body and relationships learned to do in response.

Sometimes What Is Missing Gets Passed Down Too

Trauma is not transmitted only through what families do. Sometimes it travels through what families cannot speak about.

There may be a grandfather nobody discusses, a country the family fled but rarely mentions, an identity that once had to be hidden, abuse that became a secret, or grief that was never fully acknowledged. Children may not know the history itself, but they can become deeply familiar with its emotional rules: don’t talk about that, don’t trust outsiders, be strong, never depend on anyone, succeed so that you will be safe.

From a psychodynamic perspective, what is unprocessed does not simply disappear. It can continue to shape relationships, defenses, expectations, and fears even when its origins are no longer consciously known.

History can remain psychologically alive without becoming an explicit memory.

Trauma Is Not the Only Thing We Inherit

There is a risk in conversations about intergenerational trauma that history starts to sound like destiny. Your grandmother survived a war, therefore you are damaged. Your mother was stressed during pregnancy, therefore your nervous system is permanently dysregulated. Your family has trauma, therefore you have inherited it.

The science does not support conclusions this simple.

Development remains flexible. Epigenetic regulation is dynamic. Relationships shape us throughout life. Environments change. New experiences can alter what the nervous system expects.

Families also transmit far more than wounds. They pass down adaptability, humor, rituals, resourcefulness, cultural traditions, creativity, faith, ways of caring for one another, and forms of resilience that may themselves have emerged from difficult histories.

The same family history can contain both trauma and survival.

Perhaps that is one of the most useful reasons to understand where our patterns come from. Not so that history becomes an explanation for everything, and not so that the past becomes destiny, but so that we can recognize which adaptations still serve us and which may no longer be necessary.

In therapy, we can begin to recognize these responses not simply as problems to eliminate, but as protective strategies that once served a purpose.

Your Story May Have Begun Before You

We enter families that are already in motion. There were relationships before us, losses before us, countries left behind, wars survived, secrets kept, and ways of surviving that made sense in worlds we may never personally have known.

Some of that history may have influenced the environment in which our body first developed. Some may have reached us through the nervous systems and relationships of the people who raised us. Some may live in family stories, cultural traditions, or silence. Scientists are still investigating whether some effects of extreme stress may also cross generations through epigenetic mechanisms.

We should be careful not to claim more than the science can tell us. But we also do not have to reduce inheritance to DNA.

We inherit environments as much as we inherit genes.

Understanding trauma sometimes requires us to ask not only, What happened to me? but also, What happened before me?

And once we begin to understand what our families had to carry in order to survive, we may have more freedom to decide what still belongs with us—and what does not need to be carried forward.
